Inspired by Sherry Turkle's book Alone Together, this film, directed and animated by Yukai Du for her MA graduation film, is a reflection of modern life in the digital age. It features a cinematic and ominous story of people living in a time of social media addiction. Filled with dark-toned illustrations and directorial decisions that accentuate the theme of siloed isolation, there's a dystopian digital narrative that's expertly expressed. The exaggerated contrast between the faceless citizens and the characterized phones symbolizes a world in which our virtual worlds have more life than our real ones. And the dramatic—and rather haunting—climax of the film symbolizes the idea that no one can escape the rapid rise of technology.
