Guided by the north star of Rankin Bass stop-motion films from the nostalgic era of the 60s and 70s, Moth set its course to evoke a heartwarming sense of Christmas classics. The aim was to envelop the audience in a cocoon of nostalgic warmth, creating an illusion of a timeless festive tale. The real surprise, however, awaited at the emotional twist towards the end, strategically designed to catch viewers off guard.
Moth embraced a deliberate departure from smooth animations, opting instead for a textured, rough style imposed by carefully crafted keyframes and poses. The absence of 'squash or stretch' in character movements maintained a tangible connection to the physicality of models in a real space, serving both authenticity and efficiency. Striking a balance between the technique's authenticity and the characters' relatability and expressiveness was a key challenge. By focusing on subtle face shapes and leveraging lighting for dramatic effect, Moth breathed life into characters that felt both relatable and emotive.
